Kidnappers abduct oil workers investigating oil spill at Agip’s oilfield in Bayelsa

Suspected kidnappers have reportedly abducted four persons among them two staff of Nigerian Agip Oil Company, along the waterways of Southern Ijaw  Local Government Area of Bayelsa.

It was gathered that the oil workers alongside officials of three others were on Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) to Azuzuama when they were stopped and seized in the coastal settlement.

The incident tok place on October 4, 2018.

It could be recalled that an explosion during a similar joint investigative visit claimed the lives of 14 people in Azuzuama community including an official each of NOSDRA and Bayelsa Ministry of Environment.

JIV is usually conducted to ascertain the cause of an oil spill by representatives of host community, oil firm and regulatory agencies.

.

A community source said the abducted persons include a staff of Bayelsa State Ministry of Environment, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and two from Agip Heath Safety and Environment Department).

The source said they were taken to an unknown destination, and that the kidnappers have also contacted Agip to negotiate their release.

Agip, he said, sent a letter in that regard to the Director, Petroleum and Pollution Department in the Bayelsa State Ministry of Environment.

But efforts to get response from Agip and the Bayelsa State Ministry of Environment proved abortive.

It was however gathered that armed solders have been deployed in the area in search of the kidnapped victims.

Spokesman of the joint task force in the Niger Delta, Major Ibrahim Abdullahi, said he was not aware of the abduction.

He said:"There is no information like that at my disposal. However,  I'll check further and let you know if there's anything like that."
